Study Questions for the Good Samaritan

The Story of the Good Samaritan is a well known and influential story told by Jesus.

Read Luke 10:25-37

If you have a chance, you can listen to the sermon that goes with these questions.

Reflect on the following questions, ideally with a group:

  • How has the story of the Good Samaritan impacted your life? Have you ever lived it out in real life?

  • What reasons would people give today not to stop and help the man beaten by the road?

  • Jesus affirms that Loving God and Loving neighbor are central to being righteous before God (inheriting eternal life.) On a scale of 1 to 10, how well do you think you follow this central law?

    • What makes it so difficult?

  • How far are you comfortable extending your circle of love? Who or what type of person is hard for you to show “generous concern” for? Why are some people harder to show love to?

  • In the story, the Samaritan gives up his time, money, and pride to help the man. What would be difficult for you to give up for the sake of loving your neighbor?

  • In the story, what is the problem that humanity faces, and what is the solution that Jesus provides? (What is the Good News for us in this story?)

  • Bonus: Read Matthew 19:16-22. How do you feel about Jesus’ answer to the question compared the answer here in Luke 10 or Mark 12:28-34?
