Study questions for Ascension Sunday

Consider these questions when you think about the Ascension of Jesus as seen in Luke 24:36-53:

  1. In Luke 24 Jesus appears to the disciples after his resurrection. How did Jesus try to show them that he was really alive? How might this encounter with the disciples help alleviate their doubts and fears?

  2. Reflecting on Luke 24:44-48, Jesus explains to the disciples how his suffering, death, and resurrection fulfill the prophecies in the Scriptures. In your own words, how would you describe the significance of Jesus' identity and mission as it relates to God's mission for humanity?

  3. The ascension of Jesus marks his departure from the disciples. What emotions do you think the disciples might have experienced during this moment? How might their understanding of Jesus' departure evolve over time?

  4. Luke 24:52-53 describes the disciples worshiping Jesus and returning to Jerusalem with great joy. What do you think contributed to their joy in this moment?

  5. What significance does the ascension hold in the overall narrative of Jesus' ministry?

  6. The disciples are described as continually in the temple praising God after Jesus' ascension (Luke 24:52-53). What role does worship and community play in sustaining us while we wait for God to move in our lives?

  7. Reflecting on Luke 24:49, Jesus promises the disciples that they will be clothed with power from on high. How do you think the promise of power from God would have impacted the disciples' anticipation and preparation for Pentecost?

  8. In Luke 24:51-52, Jesus blesses the disciples before ascending into heaven. Have you ever been blessed by a person or church before going on a mission trip, vacation, or service day? Why do we bless or pray for people in these situations? What is the danger if we don't?

  9. How does the story of the Ascension of Jesus prepare for Acts, the 2nd book Luke wrote?
